Mary Washington Wins Third Straight CAC Men's Soccer Championship in PKs over CNU

Mary Washington Wins Third Straight CAC Men's Soccer Championship in PKs over CNU

The 2019 CAC Men's Soccer Tournament Championship was decided on a penalty kick shootout following a 1-1 score at the end of regulation and a pair of overtime periods. Second-seeded Mary Washington earned its third consecutive league championship and 11th overall after a 3-1 tally in penalty kicks to defeated top seed Christopher Newport.

Gabriel Soriano lifted UMW to an early 1-0 edge after he headed home a Lucas Turney free kick from distance at the 4:43 mark. However, CNU responded five minutes later as Justin Wilson put back the rebound off a Michael Wilson shot for the equalizer.

It was an exciting, emotional match through the remainder of regulation and both overtime periods -- but neither program was able to produce a score to break the tie and we went to penalties to decide it.

UMW's Jacob Loving was successful on the first kick of PKs before Ken Kurtz stopped the CNU attempt to give UMW the 1-0 lead. After a pair of scores in the second round, Noah Mazzatenta gave the Eagles a 3-1 edge as Kurtz made another save in the third. Despite a miss for Mary Wash in the fourth, the championship concluded and the Eagles clinched the title when the CNU attempt rang off the crossbar to end the match.
