Greg Shedd Named Men's And Women's Tennis Coach at St. Mary's College (Md.)

Director of Athletics & Recreation Scott Devine announced Thursday afternoon that Gregory Shedd will be the next men's and women's tennis head coach at St. Mary's College of Maryland for the upcoming 2013-14 season, effective immediately.

Shedd has solid knowledge of the Seahawk men's and women's tennis programs, being an assistant this past season and helping St. Mary's to a combined 25 victories in 2012-13.

Devine stated, "I am very pleased that Greg will be taking over the head coaching reigns of our men's and women's tennis programs. We are beginning to build some momentum in tennis, as we return solid rosters on both teams. I know our players really benefited from Greg's coaching and mentoring this past year when he served as an assistant coach."

Shedd brings to the court a very successful career as both a player and coach. Since 2009, he has led the local varsity volleyball and tennis programs at Chopticon High School in Morganza, Maryland, while serving as the head coach of the junior varsity girl's basketball team and an assistant for the varsity squad.

"We are all excited to see what Coach Shedd can do with the two programs as head coach. Given his strong playing and coaching background, I am sure Greg will do an excellent job developing our players and recruiting high quality student-athletes to the College who will get the job done in the classroom and on the tennis court," added Devine.

Shedd was the No. 1 singles and doubles player at Frostburg State University (2005-09), accumulating a combined 86 victories. He was a three-time second team All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference selection in singles action.

In doubles play, Shedd earned four All-AMCC honors, including first team nods in 2006 (No. 2 doubles) and 2008 (No. 1 doubles). He helped the Frostburg State Bobcats to the AMCC team championship in 2007.

"I am very excited to have the opportunity to help improve and expand the tennis program at St. Mary's College of Maryland. After serving as an assistant coach last year, I am pleased to be able to work with such a wonderful group of student-athletes and faculty members," expressed Shedd.

Shedd has lent his tennis expertise to the City of Frederick for six straight summers (2003-09) as well, directing the USTA Junior Team and serving as a program director and instructor. He led the Junior Team to a second-place finish at the state tournament as well as the Sportsmanship Award. Shedd owns a National Tennis Rating Program ranking of 4.5.

Devine continued, "Coach Shedd has strong support from our returning players, so this should be a smooth transition for everyone involved. This is an exciting time for Seahawk tennis."

When not on the tennis courts, Shedd teaches biology and environmental science and coordinates the science fair at Chopticon. He graduated from the honors program at Frostburg State with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology plus a secondary education teaching certification.
