Mary Washington Soph. Tyler Carey Named CAC Men's Tennis Player Of The Week

Mary Washington sophomore TYLER CAREY (Moseley, Va./Cosby) was named the CAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week after leading the 25th-ranked Eagles to a come-from-behind victory over 26th-ranked Swarthmore. Carey and two teammates dropped the first sets of their singles matches before rallying for victories, giving UMW a 5-4 team triumph. Carey’s singles score was 2-6, 7-5 and 7-5 to clinch the win.
Salisbury Freshman Eric Spangler Named CAC Men's Tennis Player Of The Week

Salisbury freshman ERIC SPANGLER (Clinton, Md./Grace Brethren Christian) was named the CAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week after posting No. 2 singles victories over Christopher Newport and St. Mary’s, improving his record to 10-7 for the season. Spangler, who earned SU’s only points in the midweek loss vs. Salisbury, and partner Daniel Albers also went undefeated at No. 1 doubles and are 15-3 this season.

St. Maryâs junior ANDREW GEAR (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) was named the CAC Menâs Tennis Athlete of the Week for the second time this year after posting a 3-0 week at No. 1 singles and a 2-1 mark at No. 1 doubles. Gear posted his 50th career singles victory in a mid-week battle with Goucher, then added two CAC victories to improve his career mark to 52-11 and helping the Seahawks increase their win streak to seven matches.

Gunther and doubles partner Nick Mancuso have compiled a 7-2 record this season.

Salisbury sophomore DANIEL ALBERS (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) was named the CAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for March 26, 2013 after leading the Sea Gulls with a 6-2 record on the team’s Spring Break trip to Texas. Albers paired with Eric Spangler to go undefeated in four matches at No. 1 doubles and added a pair of straight-sets wins at No. 1 singles.

Mary Washington junior ALEX BLAKHIN (Moscow, Russia/Saddlebrook Prep) was named the CAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for March 19, 2013 after leading the Eagles to wins over York and 23rd-ranked Washington & Lee. Blakhin won his No. 2 singles match vs. York in straight sets and added a win at No. 2 doubles Friday. Blakhin then picked up two critical points at No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles in Saturday’s triumph over W&L.

York sophomore MATT ROSENKRANTZ (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) was named the CAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for March 12, 2013 after posting a 5-0 singles record and 3-2 in doubles play during the Spartans’ Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. Rosenkrantz improved his season record to 7-2 in singles play and 5-4 in doubles play with primary partner Jake Greenstein.

Salisbury junior DEMITRI VRAHNOS (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) was named the CAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for March 5, 2013 after opening the season with a 4-0 record at No. 3 singles, including a straight-set victory in an early-season CAC showdown against defending conference champion Mary Washington. Vrahnos has also won twice at No. 2 doubles in the spring campaign.
