Frostburg State Names Splinter Interim Tennis Coach

FROSTBURG, Md. – Director of Athletics Troy A. Dell announced today that Jeff Splinter will serve as Frostburg State's interim men's and women's tennis coach for the 2018-19 athletic season.

Splinter spent the last two seasons with the Bobcat tennis programs as a graduate assistant coach. He aided in all facets of the program over the last two seasons. Splinter will handle all administrative duties for the tennis programs including practice and match planning, scheduling, travel and recruiting.

"I'm blessed to be considered for the position," said Splinter. "I want to thank the Frostburg administration for believing in me and now moving me into a place where I can continue to grow Frostburg tennis."

In his two years in Frostburg, Splinter helped revitalize both the men's and women's programs. In 2016-17, the Bobcat men's team doubled its win total from the previous season. The women's team more than tripled its win total from 2015-16. Both teams improved in every major statistical category and won a combined 11 matches, the second-highest total since Frostburg joined the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC).

In Splinter's second season with the program, both teams were recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as All-Academic teams with a five women's players and three men's players lauded as ITA Scholar-Athletes. The Bobcat tennis teams combined for nine wins in 2017-18 despite adverse weather conditions and construction on the Bobcat Tennis Courts throughout the spring.

The women's team collected a CAC win over Penn State Harrisburg for the second straight season and were led by junior Jenna Lipinski, who posted a 7-6 singles record and a 3-3 mark in conference play.

The men's team made program history with several individual milestones against conference opponents. First-year Geoffrey Goldring became the first singles player to record a win against perennial CAC contender Mary Washington at No. 5 singles, and the duo of juniors Shasta Braithwaite and Nolan Jones earned the first No. 1 doubles victory of Salisbury since joining the CAC.

Before his time in Frostburg, Splinter spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Millikin University. He served as the recruiting coordinator for The Big Blue in addition to creating daily practice plans and developing strength and conditioning programs for the teams. Millikin men's tennis posted a 26-17 record and the women's squad went 21-12 in his two years in Decatur, Illinois.

He also had a one-year stay as an assistant tennis coach and intern at The College of New Jersey where both the men's and women's tennis teams reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Splinter was a team assistant for Judson University from 2013-14 and has served as the head of the tennis department for Camp Walden since 2012.

Splinter played two years of tennis and earned his bachelor's degree in elementary education from Judson University in 2014. He's is currently pursuing his masters degree educational leadership from Frostburg
