York Sweeps Men's And Women's Titles At Green & White Track & Field Invitational

The York College men's track & field team put together a tremendous performance Saturday as they won their own Green & White Invitational, recording 202 points on the day. The Spartans had a strong showing as they continue to prepare for the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, which are slated to take place at York, on Saturday, April 16.

In the men's standings, York was first with 184 points, followed by Mary Washington in second with 97, Hood in fourth with 81 and Stevenson in seventh with 19 points.

In the women's standings, YCP totaled 202 points for top honors while Mary Washington (119) and Hood (73) finished second and third, respectively.  Stevenson picked up nine team points to place ninth in the 10-team event.

The Spartans snagged eight first-place finishes on the day en route to their team victory. Senior hurdler Ben Edwards continued his consistently strong efforts as he was victorious in both the 110- and 400-meter hurdles. In the 110, Edwards crossed the line in 15.66 while taking the 400 with a 58.34. The talented senior teamed up with Gregory Gray, Chris Randise, and Le Von White in the 4x400 relay to also pick up the win with a 3:28.84.

Andrew Friesema picked up the win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a 10:06.62 while Tim Hartung won the 5,000-meter event with a 15:48.78. Fellow rookie Craig Eppler was victorious in the 10,000 meters.  The 4x100 crew of Gray, Phillip Cavaluchi, Randise, and Christopher Camodeca collected the win for the Green and White.

In the throws, the Spartans went 1-2-3-4 in the javelin. Led by Cavaluchi's 47.15-meter winning toss, Zack Raywood took second while Nicholas Paulovich and Kameron Wansel came in third and fourth, respectively.  The hammer throw saw Raywood find the runner-up spot with a 37.89-meter heave while Marcus Bailey took third in the discus with a distance of 38.81 meters.

On the women's side, sophomore Tuesday Wilson and freshman Laura Rowlands set new records Saturday as the York College women's track & field team won the 2011 Green & White Invitational at York. The Spartans collected nine event victories. 

Wilson established a new school record in the 10,000 meters. The sophomore distance runner opened the women's portion of the meet with a 42:00.00 time, breaking her own previous best by over 88 seconds.

Rowlands set a new stadium record in the triple jump as she posted an 11.07-meter distance. Rowlands would take a trio of first-place finishes on the day as she won the triple jump, the long jump (5.08 meters) and tie for the win in the high jump (1.55 meters).  That tie came to fellow Spartan Christy Guzenski as she also notched a 1.55-meter leap in the high jump.

Winners for the Mary Washington women included Brooke Thompson in the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.60), the 4x400 women's relay (Kelsey Carter, Katelyn Keller, Michelle Sutherland, Stacy Keser) at 4:19.37, and Amanda Zapata in the javelin (29.87 meters).

For the Eagle men, first places were gained by Phil Wahman among collegiate runners in the 800 meters (2:03.34) - an event in which the Eagles finished 1-2-3; Scott Plunkett in the 1500 meters (4:11.60) - an event that saw UMW finish 1-2-3-4-5; Matt Geller in the discus (40.11 meters); and Geller in the hammer throw (42.93 meters).

In other action, the Salisbury men's and women's track & field teams picked up a number of personal records and seven top-three finishes on Saturday at the Penn Invitational.

Seniors Chris Barnard and Brandon Lane each picked up wins on the men's side while sophomore Chelsea Tavik won for the women.

Barnard won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line with a time of 9:36.16, while Lane earned his win in the men's triple jump, covering a distance of 45' 6.5". Tavik kept her dominance in the shot put going, using a heave of 40' 9" to earn the win.

At the Juniata Invitational, Frostburg State's junior Chauncey Mansoncontinued his strong outdoor season in the sprints and the Bobcats turned in an all-around strong showing. FSU captured an impressive three victories, 22 individual top-five finishes and was runner-up in the 4x400-meter relay.

Manson posted two more wins and qualified for the ECACs for the fourth time in three weeks. He won the 100 meter dash in 11.09, but won the 200-meter dash in an ECAC time of 22.17.Senior Garrett Daley grabbed a win in the 110-meter hurdles in 16:89. He also tossed in a sixth-place effort in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.98.


On the women's side at Juniata, enior Emily Furr, junior Amy Brennan and freshman Morgan Carroll all posted wins
