Two Salisbury School Records Fall At Penn Relays; Frostburg State And York Compete At Shippensburg's Kaiser Invitational
The Salisbury University track & field team sent a handful of student-athletes to the historic Penn Relays this week coming away with a pair of school records.
On Thursday, the women's 4x400-meter relay team of sophomores Whitney Handy, Alex Greissinger, Kara Tolson and freshman Michelle Clark took fourth place in their heat, setting a school record, running a time of 3:59.49. The mark is more than a second better than the previous school record and the first under four minutes in school history.
Junior Chelsea Tavik placed seventh, out of 34 competitors, in the College Women's Shot Put Eastern with a top distance of 46' 10.25".
Senior Chris Barnard placed 11th in the Olympic Development Men's 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 9:22.76, just two seconds off of his school-record pace.
Classmate Becca Stinner took 19th in the College Women's 3,000-meter Steeplechase, with a time of 11:10.63, and senior John Fitzgerald placed 23rd of more than 30 runners in the Men's College 5,000-meter Run, with a time of 14:53.60.
On Friday, Salisbury's only event was the College Men's 4x400-meter Relay, where sophomores Matt Hallenbeck and Zak Osbourne and freshmen Blake Bussard and Richard Newman took the top spot in their heat with a time of 3:28.08, edging out the team from Virginia University of Lynchburg by one-tenth of a second.
On Saturday, senior Jay Drenner posted another school record in the hammer throw, covering a distance of 175'5" to take 11th in the College Men's Hammer Throw. It marks the fifth time this season that Drenner has broken the mark.
Hallenbeck led the 4x800-meter relay team with an opening leg of 1:55.3 to have the team near the top after the first leg. The quartet, which included sophomores Cody Gankiewicz and Nathan Austin and freshman Tom Burke, took 24th place in the College Men's 4x800-meter Relay Championship with a time of 7:54.25. The time was just four seconds from a school record.
Frostburg State turned in some strong performances at the 2012
Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University, Saturday. The
men's team captured three ECAC marks, three top-10 finishes and one
victory.
Senior Patrick Pinchinat picked up the
only win of the meet. After taking third in the 100-meter dash in
the preliminaries (11.21), Pinchinat rebounded to earn first place
in the finals with an ECAC time of 11.05.
Junior Chauncey Manson and senior
Wes Jacobs captured the other two ECAC
qualifying times. Manson earned second place in the 200-meter dash
in 22.30, while Jacobs finished third in the in the 800-meter dash
in 1:52.72. Jacobs' time that landed him a spot in the ECAC
Championships and was in the top-15 fastest times in the country at
the time of competition.
Combined, the trio has qualified for the ECAC's 14 times this
spring.
Senior Gavin Caupp capped the meet for
the men with a 10th-place showing in the 3,000-meter run in
9:22.90. Junior Yvon Raymond took home
11th place in the 200-meter dash (23.07), while freshman
Torez Cooke was 13th in the 100-meter
hurdles (16.83).
Junior Christian Smith led the Bobcats
in the throwing events with an 11th place finish in the shot put in
13.38 meters and a 15th place effort in the discus in 38.62
meters.
Freshman Seth Stine was 15th in the
javelin with a distance of 48.20 meters, while sophomore
Ronald Troutman was 15th in the hammer
throw at 39.41 meters. Senior Calvin
Shriver grabbed 15th place in the pole vault
in 3.55 meters.
Sophomore Samantha Taylor led the
Bobcat women with the squad's best finish. She earned fourth in the
pole vault with a height of 3.10 meters. It's her fifth-straight
top-five finish in the pole vault this spring. Taylor also added
17th in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.32.
Sophomore Morgan Carroll added the
second top-10 finish for FSU as she earned sixth in the 400-meter
dash in 1:01.08.
Sophomore Ericka Randolph earned a pair
of 26th-place finishes in the hammer throw (21.72 meters) and the
discus (20.71 meters).
York competed at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University, the Spartans' final tune-up prior to next weekend's CAC Championships.
Sophomore standout Tim Hartung broke yet another program record as he adds to his tremendous list of accomplishments this academic year. Hartung, who also owns the school record in the 5k and 10k, broken in 2012 and 2011, respectively, blistered the field in the 3,000-meter event. The sophomore ran to a Spartan-record 8:38.23 as he won the event by a full ten seconds. Hartung scorches his own previous school record of 8:54.42 set last April also at the Kaiser Classic.
Rookie Wil Murray collected his first collegiate victory on Saturday as he bested the field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Murray posted a 10:09.64 to register the triumph.
In the 5,000 meters, junior Steven Childres ran his way to a fourth-place time at the Kaiser Classic. Childres notched a 15:48.17 in the distance event.
Fellow junior Phillip Cavaluchi put together a solid effort in the long jump with a leap of 6.88 meters. His signature event saw Cavaluchi nab fifth.
Marcus Bailey captured a top-ten finish out of over 40 competitors in the discus. Bailey, who is having a strong year in this event, launched the discus 41.15 meters to collect ninth overall.
In the pole vault, Dan Bogush and Drew Chowan each notched a height of 3.85 meters to tie for 11th while triple-jumper Zach Rogers took 11th in the event with a trio of bounds equaling 12.37 meters. Alex Palescandolo registered a 12.39-meter distance in the shot put for 16th-place while Austin Dubos tossed the discus 36.63 meters to take 18th. Aaron Robertson ran to a 4:06.00 time in the 1500 meters.
York competed in their final meet before next week's CAC Championships as they traveled to Shippensburg University for Saturday's Paul Kaiser Classic.
Thrower Brittany DeManda captured York's best individual finish of the day, as she took second in the javelin. The Spartan tossed the javelin 38.40 meters to register the runner-up spot in a field that saw 40 student-athletes register distances.
Laura Rowlands, the reigning CAC Women's Track & Field Field Athlete of the Week, put together three top-tens in a trio of jumping events for the second straight meet. The springy sophomore nabbed her top finish in the high jump as she tied for third with a leap of 1.57 meters. In the triple, Rowlands posted a distance of 11.00 meters to secure fourth while she took seventh in the long jump with a 5.20-meter result.
Rookie Deborah Fidele picked up a top-ten finish of her own on Saturday, running to a 27.08 in the 200 meters to secure ninth overall. She also competed in the javelin where she recorded a 15th-place distance of 32.70 meters.
Dana Mangano collected 11th in the triple jump with a trio of bounds amounting to 10.32 meters. In the throws, Ashley Menniti competed in the shot put, discus, and hammer. The Spartan rookie's top finish came in the shot put where she nabbed 15th courtesy of a 10.01-meter heave. She posted a 29.98-meter distance in the hammer while throwing the discus 24.53 meters. Fellow thrower Katie Shinn registered a 33.24-meter result in Saturday's hammer throw.
On the track, Mandy Parshall ran to a 4:58.76 in the 1500 meters to collect 16th while Misty Parshall crossed the line at 5:02.52 in the event. Rachel Berninger ran a 2:30.74 in the 800 meters.
The Penn Relays and Paul Kaiser Invitational were the teams' final tune-up before the Capital Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships, next Saturday and Sunday at Frostburg State University.
