York Junior Distance Standout Tim Hartung Named To Capital One Academic All-America Team
York College rising senior Tim Hartung (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added another accolade to his fantastic 2012-13 campaign as he earned Capital One Division III Academic All-America honors for Men's Track and Cross Country as announced by CoSIDA on Tuesday afternoon.
He was a third-team selection and was one of 46 student-athletes to earn the national accolade.
Hartung is a nursing major and carries a 3.68 GPA at York. He was named to the District 4 academic all-region squad in late May.
The honor adds to a fantastic year for the Spartans' standout cross country and track & field performer.
In the fall, Hartung won the Capital Athletic Conference men's cross country individual championship as the Spartans repeated at conference champions. Hartung then went to the regionals and finished fifth to advance to his second straight NCAA Division III Championship. At the national championship meet in Terre Haute, Indiana, Hartung finished seventh to earn the program's first men's cross country All-American finish. He posted the best finish by a CAC runner at the Division III championships, besting Goucher's Jeff Olenick's ninth place finish in 2000.
Hartung earned the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference men's cross country runner of the Year thanks to his second consecutive conference championship.
During the indoor season, Hartung picked up two more Capital Athletic Conference titles as he won the mile and the 5K. It is the second year in a row that Hartung captured the titles in those two events during the CAC Indoor Championships. He closed out the indoor season by shaving another three seconds off the CAC and school record in the mile at the Virginia Tech meet. It was a record he established a week earlier at the George Mason Last Chance meet.
During outdoor, Hartung had a big highlight early in the season when he crushed the long-held CAC record in the 10,000-meter race at the Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Princeton. Hartung broke the 16-year old CAC record of 30:47.87 by 38.15 seconds while he broke the 33-year York College by an astounding 1:24.58. The time of 30:09.72 set him up for a trip to the Division III National Championships as it put him fourth in the early season seedings.
Hartung added to his conference championship haul in early May as he won the 5 and 10k races at the championships in Salisbury. He has now won nine Capital Athletic Conference titles during his three seasons wearing the Green and White.
For his efforts in the spring, Hartung made history as he was named the 2013 CAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year. He is the first athlete in the 24-year history of the league that an athlete has won player of the year honors in three different sports. In addition to his cross country and outdoor track honors, he was the indoor athlete of the year in February of 2012.
Hartung capped his junior season with an All-American finish at the Division III Outdoor Championships in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in the 10K. Hartung finished seventh with a time of 30:09.20 to earn his second All-American accolade of the year.
He is the first Spartan athlete to earn two All-American honors in the same academic year at two different NCAA championships.
Hartung joins Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) as a Spartan Academic All-America for 2012-13. Hartung is the ninth Academic All-America in school history.
Hartung begins his senior year when the cross country squad opens their season on August 30 at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
