The quintet of Salisbury University track & field athletes competing at the NCAA Division III Championships saw their first taste of action with three student-athletes beginning competition in preliminary races on Thursday evening. The Gulls saw three strong performances, including one school record and another runner qualify for the championship round.

Freshman Luke Campbell, who earned All-American status in his first championship appearance during the indoor season earlier this year, qualified for Saturday's final in the 400-meter hurdles in fourth place, running Thursday's race in a personal-best time of 52.36 seconds.

Campbell will attempt to qualify for a second final on Friday, as he competes in the 110-meter hurdle prelims.

Junior Kara Tolson came up just short of qualifying for the finals in the women's 200-meter dash, but did break her own school record in the event, covering the distance in 24.65 seconds, down from her previous best of 24.81.

Tolson was 14th in the prelims, with the top nine performers advancing to the finals.

Sophomore Tyler Austin placed 18th in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 21.97 seconds, less than half a second off of qualifying for Saturday's final. Austin will be back on the track on Friday, in the 100-meter dash prelims, where he is the third-seeded runner.

Also on Friday, freshman Xavier Stinson will make his national championship debut, competing in the men's high jump.
