Two Salisbury School Records Fall At Penn Relays

The Salisbury University men's and women's track & field teams sent a handful of student-athletes to the 119th Penn Relays during the past three days and in four events, the Gulls earned two school records with strong showings against some of the best competition in the country.

On Thursday, senior Chelsea Tavik beat her own school record in the shot put, with a top heave of 48' 4.75", placing fifth in a field of 23 student-athletes, all others coming from Division I institutions.

Also Thursday, the women's 4x400-meter relay team of juniors Kara Tolson and Alex Greissinger, and sophomores Ameera Teal and Brooke Schulz, ran their best time of the season, covering the distance in 4:08.22.

On Friday, the men's 4x400-meter relay team ran the second-fastest time in program history, covering the 1,600 meters in 3:16.80. Sophomore Devon Hopkins (50.1 seconds in the first leg), freshman Luke Campbell (47.7 seconds), sophomore Thomas Burke (50.5 seconds) and sophomore Richard Newman (47.9 seconds) earned a medal by being second in their heat and is one of the fastest times in the nation this season.

In the Sea Gulls' final event of the week, Burke, junior Matthew Hallenbeck and freshmen Ian Wood and Kyle Tockman set a school record in 7:46.50. Hallenbeck (1:58.4 in his leg), Wood (1:54.8), Tockman (2:00.1) and Burke (1:53.2) were more than four seconds faster than the previous school mark, which had stood since 1981. Scott Wienhold, Leslie Wright, Jay Watt and Jay Udovich had held the record at 7:50.7.

With strong performances, the Gulls now turn their focus to the Capital Athletic Conference championships, which Salisbury will host next Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5.
