Four CAC Track & Field Squads Open Spring Season on Saturday

Four CAC track & field teams opened up the spring portion of their 2015 schedules on Saturday, with Christopher Newport, Frostburg State, Mary Washington and York each competing at different meets over the weekend. 

Christopher Newport pieced together a solid showing at the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary. Lydia Cromwell headlined the day as the junior shaved 96 seconds off her previous PR in the 3000-steeplechase as she placed second with a time of 11:53.91. That performance ranks fifth in CNU history. Valerie Washington, Legend Boyesen and Daniel Richard also shined on Saturday. In the shot put, Washington finished third with an 11.54-meter heave, which ranks eighth at CNU. On the men's side, Richard excelled in the 1500 as he placed third in 4:01.63. That sits ninth on the program's all-time list. Later, Boyesen capped off the meet with a 42.23-meter toss in the discus, which ranked third on Saturday and 10th in CNU history.

Frostburg State opened up the 2015 outdoor season at the Cal U Early Bird Invitational with eight men finishing in the top-10 in their respected events, while the Bobcat women were led by freshman Zoe Harris who had one of the best finishes of the afternoon for Frostburg State. took first in her heat and finished fourth overall in the javelin with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 36.16 meters (118' 8") in the first outdoor meet of the season. The Bobcat men were led by junior JR Lowery's ECAC-qualifying toss in the shot put (15.18m, 49' 9.75"), good for third place.

York finished second out of the four competing teams on both the men's and women's sides at the Elizabethtown Early Bird Opener. Darnell Tillman led the Spartan men by starting off his outdoor campaign in similar fashion to his indoor season, setting records. The junior sprinter set the new school record in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.83, surpassing the old mark of 49.90 set in 1989. Tillman earned a second victory as he recorded a top time of 22.08 in the 200 meter dash. Ericka Quenzer excelled in her outdoor collegiate debut for the Spartan women, claiming a pair of first place finishes and a school record. She won the 100 meter hurdles and set the school record with a time of 16.28, surpassing the previous mark of 16.37 set in 2005. Quenzer also claimed first in the high jump with a height of 1.47 meters. The freshman also competed in the 200 meter dash where she placed fifth with a time of 28.95.

Mary Washington began its spring campaign on Friday by hosting the Battleground Relays. Results have not been made available from the event. 

The Salisbury men and women opened up the spring outdoor campaign last weekend at the North Carolina-Wilmington Invitational, with the men's team taking first in the meet with 169 points, while the women placed eighth with 25 points. Seniors Thomas Burke and Dylan Burkett led the men to the team title, as they notched first-place finishes in the 800-meter run and the shot put, respectively. Burke ran the 800 in 1:54.52 for his top finish, while Burkett used a 48' 2" toss to win the shot put. Burke's time puts him second in the country, while Burkett sits at sixth in the shot put.
