Southern Virginia Announces Clint May as Cross Country/Track & Field Coach

Southern Virginia University Athletic Director Jason Lamb today announced the hire of Clint May — 18-time Montana Cross Country Champion and 18-time Montana Coach of the Year — as the university's new head coach of the men's and women's cross country, as well as the men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs.

"For the past decade, Clint has been one of the best high school coaches in the country and a legend in Montana," Lamb said. "His success coaching cross country, as well as track and field makes him an ideal fit to build our programs and take our teams to the next level."

Since becoming head cross country coach at Montana's Bozeman High School in 2006, May's boys' cross country team has won nine-of-the-past-ten AA state titles and his girls' team has won nine straight. For each of his 18 state titles, May was named Montana Coach of the Year.

May has also served as Bozeman High School's assistant track and field coach since 1998.

In March 2016, Southern Virginia announced the addition of men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field as it's 16th and 17th NCAA Division III varsity sponsored sports. Led by Coach May, the track and field teams programs will compete in the Capital Athletic Conference with seven other member schools that also sponsor track and field programs.

May graduated from Montana State University in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in health enhancement and has been teaching middle school since 2007. He served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Detroit, Mich.

"I'm impressed with Southern Virginia and the direction that both the academic and athletic programs are going. I'm excited to be a part of the great things to come," Coach May commented.

"In 18 years I've learned that even in individual events a collective vision and sense of loyalty to team can take programs to new places. I'm looking forward to the journey we are beginning."

Southern Virginia University is a four-year, private liberal college located in Buena Vista, Virginia with a code of honor based on LDS values and a faith-supportive campus for Latter-day Saints.
