Christopher Newport Men's Cross Country Captures Its First CAC Crown

The Captains, led by sophomore Grayson Reid, who captured Athlete of the Year honors with his first-place performance on the 8,000-meter course, compiled 27 team points to win the championship.  The CNU women's team won its third-straight title, giving the Captains the first sweep of both men's and women's titles since Salisbury won both titles in 2010.

York, led by sophomore Grant Dell, placed second in the team standings with 48 points, followed by Salisbury (65 points) and Mary Washington (88 points) for the top four spots in the 10-team conference.

Championship host St. Mary's (185 points) edged Marymount (187 points) for fifth place, with Frostburg State (204 points), Wesley (215 points), Southern Virginia (259 points) and Penn State Harrisburg (304 points) rounding out the field.

Reid, the 2014 CAC Rookie of the Year, crossed the finish line ahead of the other 130 runners in the race in 25:20.6.  Reid, the first CNU men's cross country runner to be named CAC Athlete of the Year, was one of seven All-CAC honorees to finish among the top 16 runners in the championship race, including four first-team honorees that crossed the finish line among the first eight competitors.

Teammates joining Reid on the All-CAC first team were junior Billy Rabil (third), junior Andrew Benfer (fourth) and sophomore Daniel Read (sixth) while sophomore Jeffrey Dover (13th), freshman Payton Artz (15th) and junior Charles Pruitt (16th) were second-team All-CAC honorees.

CNU's Matthew Barreau's teams took home both championship trophies, and his peers selected him to win both men's and women's Coach of the Year awards.  It was his first CAC men's cross country Coach of the Year honor and fourth coaching honor since the Captains joined the CAC prior to the 2013-14 season.

York, which won the team championship from 2011-13, moved up one position from last year's third-place finish by placing three runners among the top eight finishers.  Dill, who crossed the finish line six seconds behind Reid, was joined on the first-team All-CAC squad by classmate Alex Smith (fifth).

YCP's other three contributors to the team score were junior Matthew Hayes (ninth), sophomore Andy MacGibbon (14th), who earned second-team All-CAC honors, and freshman Brandon Tockett (18th).

Salisbury sophomore Malcolm Milton, junior Connor Hesselbirg and freshman Billy Kirk combined to lead the Sea Gulls to third place in the standings.  Milton (7th place) and Hesselbirg (8th place) earned first-team All-CAC recognition while Kirk, who earned second-team All-CAC honors with his 12th-place finish, was presented the 2015 CAC Rookie of the Year award.

Kirk is the sixth Sea Gull to win the Rookie of the Year award since 1999 and the first since Ryan Jackson picked up the Rookie trophy in 2010.

Mary Washington also had two of the top 10 runners in the 2015 CAC championship in junior Ben Sorensen (10th) and senior Ian Granger (11th).  Both earned second-team All-CAC honors.
