Christopher Newport Places Third at NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship; 3 Captains Earn All-America Honors

The Christopher Newport men's cross country team made history on Saturday as the Captains placed third at the NCAA Championships Principia College's North Farm Cross Country Course. The third-placing team finish was the highest in CAC history. 

In the 32-team field, the Captains totaled 221 points to finish behind only North Central (Ill.) (57) and Wisconsin-La Crosse (196). York, making its first-ever appearance at the national meet, took 30th with 699 points. 

The Captains placed a trio of runners in the top-25 en route to All-America honors. Grayson Reid capped of his remarkable career with a fifth-place showing in 24:20.60, the highest individual finish at nationals in conference history. The previous best finish in the CAC came from York's two-time All-American Tim Hartung, who took seventh in 2012. 

Joining Reid on the All-America podium for the Captains was JJ LaPointe in 14th (24:40.32) and Jeff Dover in 21st (24:44.59). CNU was one of just two programs to place three runners in the top-25. 

Reid, LaPointe and Dover become the fifth, sixth, and seventh All-Americans in conference history. Previous CAC men's cross country All-Americans include Mary Washington's Jon Gates (1996) and Frank DeVar (2009), Goucher's Jeff Olenick (2000), and York's Tim Hartung (2012 & 2013). 

Alex Smith paced York in 141st place, while Mary Washington's Jeff Gibson placed 144th as the lone representative from the Eagles at nationsl.
