Christopher Newport Senior Leah Andrews Earns NFCA National Player of the Week Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Senior centerfielder Leah Andrews was named the National Player of the Week in Division III softball on Wednesday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Andrews, from Newport News, was selected just one week after teammate Rachael Payne received the very same accolade.

Andrews posted remarkable statistics last weekend at Captains Park as CNU went 3-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. She was six-for-12 at the plate for a .500 average, cracked three home runs, and drove in a dozen runs as the eighth-ranked Captains adavnced to the CAC Final this weekend vs. Salisbury. Her home runs included a two-run, three-run, and grand slam and she now has a team-high eight for the year.

Andrews, who was named the CAC's Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season, has been CNU's leadoff hitter all season. She also scored nine runs and reached base on walks four times. The Menchville High School product has recorded 18 doubles this season which is a new single-season CNU record.

Keith Parr's squad is now 33-7 and will play the Sea Gulls of Salisbury Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Captains Park int he first game of a best-of-three title series. The squads will meet again Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and then at 2:00 p.m. if necessary.
