FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Salisbury senior Annie Pietanza, York senior Haley Hirn and Christopher Newport sophomore Aubrey Bates claimed CAC Softball Player of the Week honors for April 16, 2018.

Salisbury senior Annie Pietanza was named the CAC Co-Player of the Week after hitting .643 (9-for-14) with nine RBIs, seven runs scored, and at least two hits in each game in a 4-0 week for the Sea Gulls. Pietanza slugged 1.357 with six of her nine hits going for extra bases, knocking four doubles and a pair of home runs. She is currently on a nine-game hitting streak with at least two hits in seven of those games. In Salisbury's two closest games of the week, Pietanza registered key hits. Her RBI double in the fifth inning of a 6-0 win at SVU pushed the lead to 3-0 and she capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the seventh. In the eighth inning of a 5-2 win against Frostburg State, it was Pietanza's solo home run to lead off the eighth inning and give Salisbury a 3-2 lead, proving to be the game winner.

York senior Haley Hirn was chosen as the CAC Co-Player of the Week after hitting .652 (15-for-23) with five RBIs, eight runs scored, four doubles, two home runs and 25 total bases in a 4-3-1 week for the Spartans. Hirn registered at least two hits in six of the eight contests, and posted an on-base percentage of .679 and slugging percentage of 1.087. In the doubleheader sweep over Mary Washington, Hirn recorded her 100th career hit with a home run. 

 

 

 

Pitcher of the Week

Christopher Newport sophomore Aubrey Bates was tabbed as the CAC Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season after throwing the 24th no-hitter in CNU softball history, and first in over four years, Saturday at Penn State Harrisburg. She struck out eight Lions and issued just two walks while facing just 23 batters. It completed a 2-1 week for the sophomore, who is now 11-1 on the season for the fourth-ranked Captains. Bates also threw a five-inning complete game win vs. York and lost her first game of the year to top-ranked and undefeated Virginia Wesleyan. For the week, she totaled 13 strikeouts and allowed just three earned runs for an ERA of 1.17 in 18.0 innings of work.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

In the April 11 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll, Christopher Newport is ranked No. 4 ... CNU freshman Patty Maye Ohanian led the Captains this week by going 13-for-22 (.591) with a home run and seven runs batted in. She also scored five times and stole four bases for the fourth-ranked squad ... Frostburg State senior Sam Gatton hit .529 with nine runs scored, four RBIs and six stolen bases as Frostburg capped its week at 3-3 ... Senior Caroline Callahan led Mary Washington with a .429 average this week, with six hits in 14 at bats. She stole six bases without being caught ... Penn State Harrisburg junior Allison Hartman picked up two wins in the circle for the Lions, defeating F&M 5-1 and Mary Washington 3-2. Hartman also pitched well in the Lions' 4-0 loss against Christopher Newport, holding the No. 4 Captains to their lowest run total in a CAC game this season ... Salisbuy senior Rachael Milligan was stellar in a pair of CAC wins, going the distance against Southern Virginia and Frostburg State over the weekend. While getting great run support, Milligan gave up just three runs (two earned) over 10 innings in the circle, making 13 of her 30 outs (43%) by strikeout. Milligan had a 1.40 ERA for the two games and opposing batters hit just .179 against her ... Southern Virginia sophomore Megan Harmon went 3-2 last week, highlighted by a perfect game against Trinity (D.C.), in which she struck out 10 in five innings. Sophomore Heather Terranova brought in a team-high 11 RBIs last week, with three or more in each win she played in. Terranova batted .474 and now leads the team in RBIs. She leads the team in at bats, hits, doubles, runs, RBIs, and home runs this season. She has also caught a pair of runners stealing from behind the plate, and picked one off on Saturday ... Wesley freshman Abbey Mayse went 2-1 on the week with a pair of complete games in wins over Frostburg State and Southern Virginia. Sophomore Brandi Dalious batted .357 on the week with a home run, seven runs batted in, three doubles and three runs scored for the Wolverines. Dalious slugged .786 and registered an on-base percentage of .400.
