Christopher Newport Clinches Second Straight CAC Softball Title

Top-seeded Christopher Newport rebounded from its game one loss to sweep Salisbury by scores of 10-4 and 6-4 on Saturday, clinching the Captains' second-straight CAC softball title at Captains Park. It also marks CNU's fourth CAC crown in the last five seasons.

With the victory, CNU earns the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It will mark the 12th straight NCAA appearance for CNU and 16th in program history. NCAA selections and pairings will be announced on Monday at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.

CNU's Leah Andrews and Rachael Payne both registered four hits throughout Saturday's doubleheader, while Emerald Cheesbrew laced three in five at bats. Patty Maye Ohanian, who pumped three hits on Friday, came back with a knock in both games on Saturday to extend her hitting streak to 23 straight contests. She also picked up the victory in the opener after tossing the first seven-inning complete game of her career.

With the two wins, the Captains improved to 35-8 on the season and locked up the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, the setbacks dropped Salisbury to 28-13. The Sea Gulls will now be on the lookout for a possible at-large bid to the national playoffs.

During the championship series, Payne posted a .545 batting average to go along with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Ohanian and Leah Andrews also laced five hits apiece, while Couch had four to go along with her stellar play at third base.
