Top Seeds Christopher Newport and Salisbury Take Two on Opening Day of CAC Softball Tournament

Top seeds Christopher Newport and Salisbury each went 2-0 on their home fields on the opening day of the CAC Softball Tournament on Friday. The Captains and Sea Gulls will both host 10 a.m. contests on Saturday with the opportunity to advance to next weekend's championship round.

In Newport News, Va., top-seeded CNU began the day with a 14-4 victory over sixth-seeded Penn State Harrisburg and then followed with a 10-0 victory later in the day over fourth-seeded Frostburg State. Both triumphs came in just five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

The Captains scored a total of 24 runs on 25 hits for the day, as CNU plated runs in eight of nine innings played. Senior centerfielder Leah Andrews had a huge day for the Captains, going four-for-five at the plate with seven runs scored and seven runs batted in. Andrews drove in six runs in the opening game against Penn State Harrisburg, and smacked her sixth home run of the season, a grand slam in the fourth inning that closed out the scoring in the 14-4 victory.

In the middle game of the day at Captains Park, Frostburg State knocked out Penn State Harrisburg, 7-3.

CNU and Frostburg State will meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. A CNU win sends the Captains to next weekend's best-of-three championship series, while the Bobcats need a pair of wins to keep their postseason alive.

In Salisbury, Md., second-seeded Salisbury posted a 2-0 mark with a 7-1 win over fifth-seeded Mary Washington in the first game of the day, before third-seeded York knocked out UMW with a 6-0 triumph. The Sea Gulls then closed out the day with a 12-3 victory over York, putting them in the winner's bracket heading into Saturday's action.

LeAnne Collins paced the Sea Gulls in the pair of wins, going 5-for-9 at the plate with three RBIs and four runs scored.

The victory over UMW also marked the 800th career win for SU head coach Margie Knight. Knight is just the 13th coach in Division III history to reach the 800-win plateau, and has been efficient about it with her 80.6 winning percentage ranked fourth among all Division III coaches.

Salisbury and York will clash at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the Spartans needing a pair of victories to advance to the championship round.
