Christopher Newport and Salisbury Win NCAA Softball Regional Openers

Christopher Newport and Salisbury both posted victories on the opening day of their respective NCAA Softball Regional Tournaments on Friday.

In Newport News, Va., host CNU downed Messiah 13-3 in the opening game of the regional at Captainks Park. The Captains (36-8) will take on top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Virginia Wesleyan defeated Gettysburg 9-2 in the second game of the day Friday.

Freshman Patty Maye Ohanian hit two home runs to lead the Captains, including a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning that ended the game due to the eight-run mercy rule. Ohanian, who extended her hitting streak to 24 games, drove in five runs as she also cracked a solo shot in the third inning. The Rookie of the Year in the CAC now has 10 home runs and 62 runs batted in for the season.

In Ewing, N.J., Salisbury edged Moravian 3-2 in eight innings in a regional hosted by TCNJ. The Sea Gulls (29-13) will take on Johnson & Wales in the second round on Saturday at 10 a.m. Johson & Wales topped host TCNJ 3-1 in Friday's other contest. 

Deadlocked at 2-2 in the eighth, Cat Ramagnano singled to right center to knock in Sami Mumford for what would prove to be the game-winning run.
