Christopher Newport Wins Pod B, Advances to CAC Softball Tournament Championship Series
Christopher Newport controlled the competition in Pod B of the 2019 CAC Softball Tournament and now awaits the winner from Pod A ahead of next weekend's CAC Championship Series.
CNU, the No. 2 seed, cruised to victory on Sunday (April 28) morning with a 9-1 victory in six innings over No. 5 Frostburg State. The Captains went 3-0 in pod play over the weekend as they eliminated both Salisbury and Frostburg to advance in the league tournament.
CNU scored four runs in the second inning and followed that with a pair of runs in both the third and fourth frames to take control of the contest. Grace Wild led the Captains with five RBI on the day, including a 2-run home run in the fourth inning. Kaitlyn Hasty also connected on a pair of home runs to propel CNU to victory.
In Pod A action on Saturday (April 27), No. 1 Mary Washington went 1-1 on the day after an 8-4 victory over No. 6 Southern Virginia was followed up by a 7-3 defeat at the hands of No. 4 York. No. 6 Southern Virginia also scored three runs in the final two innings to stun York by a 3-2 final as all three teams are still alive after the first day with 1-1 records.
Since Southern Virginia does not compete on Sunday's, Pod A action will resume on Monday with York facing Southern Virginia, with the winner facing Mary Washington for a spot in the CAC finals.
The winner of Pod A on Monday (April 29) will advance to face Christopher Newport in a best-of-three championship series May 3-4 at the field of the highest remaining seed. The complete tournament schedule is below:
