NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -  Sophomore designated player Patty Maye Ohanian is one of ten student-athletes who have been chosen as finalists for the 2019 Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III National Pitcher and Player of the Year award. The announcement was made Tuesday morning by the NFCA. It's the second straight year Ohanian has been a finalist for the yearly honor.

Ohanian, from Burke, Va., led the Captains with a .455 batting average this season and hit 14 home runs and drove in 53 runs in 46 games. She was selected first team All-Conference in the Capital Athletic Conference, first team All-Region in the Atlantic by the NFCA, and was picked the Most Outstanding Player at the Union, N.J., Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Christopher Newport's season ended on Sunday in the Super Regionals of the tournament, and Keith Parr's squad concluded the year with a 37-9 record.

Ohanian crushed four of her 14 home runs in the Union Regional, where she went 8-for-11 at the plate over three games. She also drove in nine runs as she led CNU to three straight victories.

The list of national finalists is compiled annually by the NFCA's Division III All-America committee. The list started with 50 names before the season, and was reduced to 25 prior to the start of NCAA regionals. The winners of the Player of the Year and new Pitcher of the Year honor will come from this group of ten finalists and be announced following the completion of the NCAA championship finals, which begin on Thursday in Tyler, Texas.
