NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Making history for Christopher Newport as the first softball player ever recognized, junior second baseman Grace Wild was named a CoSIDA Academic All-District® selection in a release by the organization last week. One of the Captains' leading players for the last three years, Wild adds the esteemed academic honor to her mantel after helping guide CNU to a conference championship and 13th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The organization recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions - NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA - and divides the student-athletes into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.

Wild is the first CNU softball player to earn the honor and the fifth Captains' student-athlete recognized this year. On the same day as senior baseball star Nicholas Baham was recognized, Wild joined Carson Pokorny (Women's Soccer), Ben James (Football), and Josie Lucernoni (Volleyball) among honored Captains this year.

Carrying a 3.78 cumulative GPA at the time of her nomination, Wild is majoring in Neuroscience at Christopher Newport. She has been named to the Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team in each of her first two seasons and is in line to repeat with that designation this year. While performing well in the classroom, the Captains' starter at the keystone has put together a career year at the plate as well as in the field for CNU.

Wild is hitting .433 with 55 hits in 127 at-bats this season, including 25 for extra-bases. She has a team-leading 16 doubels and has scored a team-high 48 times while also delivering 32 RBI at the top of CNU's dangerous lineup. The Potomac Falls, Va. native is 12-for-12 in stolen base attempts and has committed just four errors at second base for a .964 fielding percentage in 110 total chances. She is one of only two players two start all 42 games for the Captains this season.

Earning her third All-Conference designation this year, Wild is a two-time NFCA All-Region selection. She is currently playing in the NCAA Regional in Union, NJ and has helped guide the Captains to the regional final against the host Kean University Cougars.

First team Academic All District® honorees, like Baham, advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second-, and third-team Academic All-America® Baseball honorees will be announced on June 5.
