The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated New York University, 74-63, in the NCAA Division III Championship Consolation Game on Saturday in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Eagles close the season with their 31st win of the season, tied for the most wins in the nation, and closes the most successful season in school history with a 31-3 record.
Senior Debbie Bruen closed her All-America career with a game-high 21 points, and added eight rebounds and six assists. Lisa Tracy scored a season high 18 points with seven rebounds, and Liz Hickey scored 14 points in 21 minutes with seven rebounds and five blocked shots. The victory for the Eagles gives the team 31 wins for the season, two more than last year's 29-2 squad, breaking the school record for season wins in the team's first-ever Final Four appearance. Additionally, head coach Deena Applebury was selected as the 2007 Russell Athletic/WBCA National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
