Mary Washington Women And St. Mary's Men Win NCAA Tournament First-Round Games; Marymount Women Suffer 10-Point Loss

The fourth-ranked Mary Washington women's basketball team and the St. Mary's men's basketball team each posted victories while the Marymount women's team suffered a season-ending 10-point setback in Friday's opening round of the 2008 NCAA Division III basketball championship tournaments.

In the women's tournament Friday, host Mary Washington (27-2) stopped Baruch by a 73-58 margin to advance to Saturday's second against visiting TCNJ.  Junior guard Katy Larson (McGaheysville, Va./Spotswood) scored 18 points and senior center Liz Hickey (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan) added 17 points, 13 rebounds, and blocked four shots for the CAC champion Eagles.

Marymount (23-6) ended its season with a 73-63 loss vs. Salem (Mass.) State in a neutral-site game played at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa.  The Saints led by four points (50-46) with 8:13 left in the game, but the winners went on a 27-13 run down the stretch to claim the win.  Kathleen Brown led the Saints with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Beth Wiggins added 12 points and five rebounds.

In the men's tournament, CAC champion St. Mary's (18-11) pulled the upset by posting an 89-77 triumph over 8th-ranked Guilford on the Quakers' home court.  SMC, making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, will challenge Widener in Saturday's second round at Guilford.  Tyson Lesesne scored 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting including a 6-of-9 showing from three-point range to lead the Seahawks.  Alex Irmer picked up 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting.  Mike Smelkinson added 18 points including 4-of-8 from three-point land.  He also dished out seven assists.
