Mary Washington And Marymount, The Top Two Teams During The Regular Season, Will Meet Saturday For CAC Women's Basketball Title

The two teams that have battled for the top spot in the Capital Athletic Conference women's basketball standings will meet in the 2008 Championship Game Saturday (3/1) at the University of Mary Washington's Goolrick Gymnasium (4:30 p.m.).

Top-seeded Mary Washington (25-2), ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region, will host second-seeded Marymount (23-4), the No. 5-ranked team in the region, for the 2008 CAC crown.

UMW, the defending CAC champ, will go after its third conference crown in the last four years after posting a 71-58 semifinal playoff triumph over fourth-seeded York (19-8) Thursday.

Marymount, which has won 10 championships in the 17-year history of the CAC, outlasted sixth-seeded Salisbury (12-15) in Thursday's other semifinal by a 75-66 margin. The Saints have won three CAC titles in the last five years, the most recent in 2006.

The teams have met twice this season, with the Eagles sweeping the series with wins of 68-56 at Arlington, Va., on Jan. 16, and 81-50 in Fredericksburg, Va., on Feb. 16.

The winner of Saturday's championship game will gain an automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The 64-team bracket will be announced Monday (3/3) morning.
