Mary Washington Claims 3rd CAC Women's Basketball Titles In Four Years With 90-59 Triumph Over Marymount

Forward Ashton Mitchell tallied a game-high 23 points and senior All-American center Liz Hickey added a double-double with 17 scores and 11 boards to lead top-seeded Mary Washington to a 90-59 victory over second-seeded Marymount in the 2008 CAC women's basketball championship game Saturday.

The Eagles (26-2), ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, captured their second-straight CAC crown and third in the last four years.  It was the third-straight year Mary Washington and Marymount played in the CAC women's basketball championship contest.

Mitchell drained 9-of-13 field goal attempts and Hickey knocked down 6-of-12, including a three-point shot off glass in the final minute of the contest, to lead UMW.  The Eagles connected on 34-of-63 field goal attempts (54%) and outrebounded the visitors by a 48-27 margin.

Lisa Tracey added 17 points and eight rebounds, Katy Larson chipped in 12 points and a game-high eight assists and Kaitie Clarkin tallied 11 points for the Eagles.

Meredith Levison paced Marymount (23-5) with 12 points while Terell White and Kathryn Wilson each scored 10.  The Saints hit just 35.6% from the field (21-of-59).

Mary Washington clinched an automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Championship Tournament.  Marymount, which suffered three of its five losses to top-ranked UMW, will hope for an at-large bid to the national championship event.  Pairings for the NCAA Tournament will be announced Monday (3/3).
