Mary Washington's Deena Applebury was named a finalist for the national Coach Of The Year award while Marymount junior Katelyn Fischer and York senior April Sparkman were named honorable mention All-Americans by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

Applebury's No. 7 Mary Washington team advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA DIII National Tournament, riding a program-best 30-0 record, before ending the season with a 30-1 mark. The eighth-year head coach was named the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Coach of the Year in 2007 and has earned WBCA regional coach of the year nods twice before.

Fischer is the 11th Saint in program history to garner All-American recognition.  She was previously tabbed the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year, D3Hoops.com All-Region and First Team All-CAC by the league’s coaches. Dominant in every aspect on the floor for the Blue and White, Fischer averaged 17.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.4 steals per game while ranking in the top-10 of eight different statistical categories.  Also stellar in the classroom, Fischer was named Capital One First Team Academic All-District®, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) after posting an impressive 3.96 GPA.

Sparkman, who was also named to the has been named to the d3hoops.com All-Atlantic first-team along with Fischer earlier this week, helped lead the Spartans to 24 wins and their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance.  She finished her career as a three-time all-region honoree. Sparkman was a huge part of the Spartans run to their second Sweet 16 in four years. She led the Spartans in scoring at 16.2 points per game. She shot 41.1% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 71.3% from the charity stripe.
