Christopher Newport will become the third women's basketball team in CAC history to compete in the NCAA Final Four on Friday night, when the No. 7 Captains (29-2) take on top-ranked and unbeaten Amherst (31-0) in the second game of a national semifinal doubleheader in Grand Rapids, Mich.

In the opening national semifinal on Friday, No. 2 St. Thomas (31-0) will face No. 4 Tufts (29-2) at 5 p.m. The two winners will meet in Saturday's national championship at 7:30 p.m.

The Final Four appearance is the second in program history for the Captains and the first in the CAC since the 2006-07 campaign. The Captains previously reached the Final Four in 2010-11. Previous CAC teams to reach the Final Four include Mary Washington (2006-07) and Marymount (2001-02).

CNU advanced to the national semifinals with NCAA Tournament victories over Staten Island, Lynchburg, Hope, and Ohio Northern.

CNU and Amherst have only played once before, when the Massachusetts-based team defeated the Captains in the team's only other Final Four appearance in 2011. CNU then advanced to beat Illinois Wesleyan in the consolation game to finish out the 2011 season with a program-best finish and a 30-4 record. The national consolation game has since been eliminated.

Making the program's 18th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Captains have now advanced at least as far as the Sweet 16 in six straight tournament appearances. In five seasons under Broderick, the Captains are 11-3 in tournament play, advancing to a pair of Sweet 16's, an Elite Eight, and now a Final Four appearance.
