Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, and Marymount each registered victories in the first round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday, marking the first time in CAC history that three teams advanced to the second round of the national tournament.

In Newport News, Va., Christopher Newport led wire-to-wire in a dominating victory, cruising by Staten Island, 98-56. The Captains, led by a sensational performance from the bench with 78 points, set program records for NCAA Tournament scoring and margin of victory with the win. CNU (26-2) will take on Lynchburg (23-6) in Saturday's second round at 7 p.m. at the Freeman Center. Lynchburg defeated Catholic 69-64.

All 15 players saw playing time for the Captains, with nine players recording seven points or more in a truly balanced effort. Micah Maloney led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds, Sam Porter notched 12 points, and Jasmine Bonivel tallied 10 points and six boards.

In Amherst, Mass., Mary Washington built a 10-point halftime advantage, lost it, and then held on for a 62-57 victory over Sage. The victory sends the Eagles to the NCAA second round for the first time since 2011-12.

UMW All-America senior Brianne Comden scored 24 points for the Eagles (24-4), who advance to Saturday's second round to take on unbeaten Amherst (28-0). Amherst defeated Regis (Mass.). 65-37 in the other first round matchup. The second round matchup is set for 6 p.m.

In Greensboro, N.C., Marymount held off a furious fourth-quarter rally from host Guilford for a 74-70 victory. The win sends the Saints to the second round for the second straight season. Marymount will take on Albright (23-5), a 64-54 winner over Piedmont, at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Leading 60-38 entering the fourth, Guilford mounted an incredible comeback, pulling within one point at 66-65 with 44 seconds remaining. A Nicole Viscuso jumper with 35 seconds left put the Saints back up by three, and strong free throw shooting in the waning seconds preserved the win for MU.
