Marymount's Hurst & Rogers, Southern Virginia's Garrish Receive Top CAC Women's Basketball Honors
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Marymount senior Leah Hurst and head coach Ashlee Rogers received top conference honors to highlight the 2018 All-CAC Women's Basketball Team for the CAC-champion Saints. Southern Virginia freshman Katie Garrish picked up the other major award as CAC Rookie of the Year.
Hurst, who scored the game-winning basket with 0.3 seconds remaining in Saturday's CAC Championship game, was named CAC Player of the Year. A two-time All-CAC first-team selection, Hurst becomes the eighth Saint to win Player of the Year laurels, and first since the 2012-13 season.
Rogers was selected by her peers as the "Bill Finney" CAC Coach of the Year for the third time in her career after guiding the Saints to both the regular season and tournament championships. She also won the award in 2012-13 and 2015-16.
Garrish is the first-ever Southern Virginia player to receive Rookie of the Year honors from the CAC. The freshman center was also a second-team All-CAC selection.
Marymount led the All-CAC squad with a trio of all-star selections. Hurst was a repeat first-team selection, while sophomore guard Regan Lohr picked up the first all-conference honors of her career as a first-team pick. Senior forward Sam Porter collected her third consecutive first-team All-CAC nod, while senior guard Makenzie Fancher received first-team accolades for the first time in her career. Fancher was a second-team pick each of the last two seasons.
York secured a pair of all-conference honors, with senior guard Katie Wagner landing on the first team and junior forward Katie McGowan earning a spot on the second team. It was the first career All-CAC awards for both Spartans.
Frostburg State sophomore Victoria Diggs, the 2017 CAC Rookie of the Year, represented the Bobcats on the All-CAC first team.
Along with Garrish, Southern Virginia senior Shelby Butler also collected All-CAC second team recognition for the Knights.
