Christopher Newport Women's Basketball Advances to NCAA Sweet 16 for Third Straight Season; Marymount Knocked Out by Rochester

For the third-straight season and fifth time in the last six years, No. 20 Christopher Newport is headed to the NCAA Sweet 16 following a 84-58 victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday in Ashland, Va.

With the victory, the Captains (25-4) advance to next weekend's third round, where they will meet Hope (28-1) in a rematch of last year's third-round matchup. CNU defeated Hope 79-74 last season en route to the Elite Eight and eventually the Final Four. 

CNU led from start to finish in the victory over the Yellow Jackets, building a 25-14 lead after the first quarter and a 47-31 halftime edge on the way to a 26-point victory on Randolph-Macon's home court. Sam Porter led the Captains with 19 points and four rebounds, while Bailey Dufrene tallied 16 points, four assists and three boards in the win. A well-balanced attack paced the Captains, as four players scored seven points apiece and 13 players contributed to the scoring column in the victory. 

In other second round action, No. 17 Marymount was knocked out by No. 15 Rochester (N.Y.) 53-42 in Rochester. With the loss, the Saints conclude the year with a 25-4 record. Rochester (23-4) will take on RIT (23-6) in next weekend's Sweet 16. Regan Lohr paced the MU offense for the night with 12 points, while Tyfanni McQueen added 11. Leah Hurst finished with eight points to go along with four assists, three rebounds and two steals for the Saints.
