Southern Virginia Tabs Adam Wardenburg as Head Women's Basketball Coach

BUENA VISTA, Va.— Southern Virginia University Vice President and Director of Athletics Jason Lamb today named Adam Wardenburg as the Knights' next head women's basketball coach.

"I am excited to bring Adam into our athletic department," Lamb said. "His basketball resume and network are strong and he has the ability to find and attract the best student-athletes for who we are. Adam comes from a basketball family and his experience at different levels make him a perfect fit for our program."

Wardenburg is coming to Southern Virginia after successful stints at the NCAA Division I and junior college levels. Most recently, he served the past four seasons as an assistant women's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Utah Valley University. During his time at UVU, he helped lead the Wolverines to consecutive appearances in the WAC Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history.

Before moving to UVU, Wardenburg spent the 2013-14 season on the College of Southern Idaho coaching staff where he helped the Golden Eagles to a 29-4 record, a Region 18 Tournament Title, and a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament. Prior to CSI, Wardenburg served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the women's team at Utah State University.

"My family and I are excited for this great opportunity at Southern Virginia," Wardenburg said. "Southern Virginia gives athletes opportunities to live a good, balanced life and have a great education. I'm excited to serve the players and help them in all aspects. We are going to compete right away and bring championships to the program."

Wardenburg, who becomes the fourth head coach of the Southern Virginia women's basketball program, earned his bachelor's degree in human movement science from Utah State University and an MBA from Western Governor's University.

He replaces Heather Roberts who stepped down as Southern Virginia's head women's coach after four seasons to become the head boys coach at Yamhill Carlton High School in her home state of Oregon where her twin sons will attend beginning 2020. Roberts is the first woman to coach an Oregon high school boys team since the 1930's, according to Portland's kgw.com.

Last season, Roberts led the Knights to a 12-13 overall record and recruited the team's standout player, freshman Katie Garrish, who earned CAC Rookie of the Year, D3hoops.com All-Region Team, and VaSID All-State honors.
