SMC's Lauren Carrier To Be Featured In Sports Illustrated's Faces In The Crowd Segment

When the April 6 edition of Sports Illustrated hits newsstands next week, Capital Athletic Conference fans will spot a familiar face as St. Mary's College of Md. women's soccer and women's lacrosse standout Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) will be one of six athletes featured in SI's "Faces in the Crowd."

Carrier's recognition in SI is a result of her breaking the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse record for consecutive games with at least one goal.  On March 5, Carrier surpassed the old mark of 45 set by Scranton's Liz Baumbach from March 28, 2001 to May 10, 2003 with three goals in a win over Washington (Md.).

She continues to bolster her NCAA Division III record as the streak currently stands at 54, which includes her five-goal performance in a loss at No. 4 TCNJ on Sunday.  Carrier started the streak as a freshman on April 15, 2006 in a loss to Mary Washington.

The 5-5 midfielder commands the Seahawk offense with team-highs of 43 goals and 52 points, ranking her ninth in Division III in points.  Elizabethtown's Katie Foley is the nation's leader with 63 points.

With Carrier at the helm of St. Mary's high-powered offense, the Seahawks are third in the nation in points with 245 through 12 games.  Leading Division III in points is No. 1 Salisbury with 321 points through 11 games.  St. Mary's is currently ranked 18th in Division III with a 9-3 record.

In soccer, Carrier is a two-time CAC Player of the Year and first-team all-star (2006, 2008) pick after leading the Seahawks this season with 29 points in 12 games played on a team-high 13 goals and three assists.  Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury on October 15 versus Virginia Wesleyan College, she also led the conference with 2.42 points per game and 1.08 goals per game and was named to the NSCAA All-Region team.

Carrier tallied a career-high four goals and eight points in a 4-0 win at Hood College.  Carrier was tied for second in the CAC with a team-leading three game-winning goals, while also being second in points and goals and sixth in assists per game with 0.25.   She finished her four-year career with 56 points on 24 goals and eight assists in 61 games played with 34 starts.  She also notched six game-winning goals.

Carrier is the third SMC student athlete in the last eight years to be honored in the "Faces In The Crowd" section of Sports Illustrated.  Men's soccer standout Ryan Olsen was featured in the Nov. 5, 2001 edition and field hockey all-star Emily Richards was profiled in the Oct 31, 2005 magazine.
