UMW Women's Lax Tops Christopher Newport in NCAA Tourney 1st Round, 13-9

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used a solid second half defensive effort in topping Christopher Newport University, 13-9, on Wednesday night in Newport News, Va., in a game delayed for two hours and 22 minutes by lightning at the outset. The Eagles (14-7) will advance to face Catholic University on Saturday in Salisbury, Md., at 2:30 p.m.

Salisbury senior goalie SONJA STUART (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) was named the CAC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after recording a season-high 11 saves and holding top-ranked TCNJ to just six goals as the No. 2 Sea Gulls gained the five-goal victory. Stuart and the SU defense held TCNJ scoreless for 23 minutes during the middle of the contest (just two goals in the last 37:51) and held the visitors more than 10 goals under their season average of 16.78 per contest. Stuart improved to 13-1 with a 7.49 goals against average by holding TCNJ to it’s lowest scoring total of the season.

Salisbury junior attack BETH RHODEY (Fallston, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was named the CAC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after scoring three goals and adding an assist in a pair of victories as the top-ranked Sea Gulls topped Ursinus and 18th-ranked St. Mary’s. Rhodey, who scored the game-winning goal at Ursinus and added two ground balls, is second on the team in points (50), goals (34) and ground balls (22) this season.

St. Mary’s senior midfielder LAUREN CARRIER (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) was named the CAC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after scoring 13 goals and 15 points in three games last week, including five goals and two helpers in a showdown win over nationally-ranked CAC rival Mary Washington. Carrier started the week with three goals and two draw controls in a win at Hood, then sparked the 17th-ranked Seahawks to the three-goal win over 19th-ranked UMW. She also provided five of SMC’s eight scores in a weekend setback vs. fourth-ranked TCNJ. For the week, she added nine draw controls, four ground balls, 4-for-4 on free position shots and caused three turnovers.

Salisbury junior attack KIM CUDMORE (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) was named the CAC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after pouring in seven goals, adding seven assists and seven ground balls as the Sea Gulls went 2-0 last week, including a three-goal win over the defending NCAA Division III Champion Hamilton Continentals last week. Cudmore tallied a career-high 11 points with games highs of six goals and five assists in the Gulls win over Roanoke. Her goal, assist and point totals were team highs this season. She also had a goal and two assists in the midweek showdown between the top two teams in the country, which gave Salisbury three regular-season wins over the top-ranked team in the country in the last three seasons.

Mary Washington freshman attack ALLIE KIMMELMAN (Burke, Va./Robinson) was named the CAC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after scoring all eight of her goals this season in two matches last week, leading the Eagles to a pair of victories. Kimmelman scored her first three goals of the season, and added two assists, as UMW improved to 2-0 in CAC play with a win at Wesley. She then scored a career-high five times, and added an assist, as the Eagles upended eighth-ranked Washington & Lee.

St. Mary’s senior midfielder LAUREN CARRIER (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) was named the CAC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week after helping the Seahawks to an upset win over 15th-ranked Dickinson and tying the NCAA Division III record for most consecutive games with at least one goal. Carrier tallied three scores in SMC’s 10-5 victory over Dickinson, then tied the national record with at least one goal in 45-straight games with four goals against CAC rival Wesley.

Mary Washington freshman midfielder CATHERINE KENNEDY (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) was named the first CAC Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week for the 2009 season after a memorable debut for her collegiate career. Kennedy found the back of the net six times, including what proved to be the game-winning goal, in UMW’s season-opening victory at Guilford. She also chipped in with two ground balls and two turnovers for the Eagles.
