Mary Washington And Stevenson Win Home Matches In Opening Round Of 2012 CAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament

Mary Washington and Stevenson successfully defended home turf as the higher-seeded teams advanced to Tuesday's conference semifinal round of the 2012 CAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

The third-seeded and 13th-ranked UMW Eagles ran away from sixth-seeded Marymount, 24-13, to earn a berth in the semifinals at second-seeded and 11th-ranked York.

The fourth-seeded and 19th-ranked Mustangs held off a stubborn St. Mary's squad, 11-7, to advance to the semifinal round, where they'll meet top-seeded and top-ranked Salisbury.

At Mary Washington, senior Catherine Kennedy - already the school's leading career goals and points scorer - captured another school mark with 11 goals as the 13th-ranked Eagles defeated Marymount University, 24-13. With the win, the Eagles improve to 13-3 on the year, and will advance to the CAC semifinals on Tuesday at York College.  Marymount hung tough with the Eagles, leading 4-3 midway through the first half. But the Eagles scored four straight goals, including two from Kennedy, to up the lead to 7-4 with 8:32 to play in the half. After a pair of Saints goals, the Eagles ended the half with three straight goals to hold a 10-6 advantage at intermission.  In the second half, the teams started by trading the first four goals, but UMW scored three straight to up its lead to 15-8 with 23:29 left. Each team then scored twice, bringing the total to 12 goals scored in the opening 11 minutes of the half. UMW pulled away in the final 15 minutes, outscoring the guests, 7-2.  Kennedy's 11 goals breaks the record of nine goals in a game, previously held by Pam Heller in 1986 and Suzy Baughman in 1988. She also added two assists in the game. Fellow All-American Allie Kimmelman added three goals and three assists for the Eagles. Marymount was led by Taylor Johnson's two goals and two assists.

At Stevenson, Stevenson senior Laura Grammer and sophomore Marissa Meiklejohn each scored three goals as the 19th-ranked Mustangs posted an 11-7 victory over St. Mary's.  The Mustangs (9-6) scored five free-position goals and won for the sixth time in seven home games this season.  Grammer finished with a game-high four points and was 3-for-4 on free
position attempts while adding an assist and three draw controls.  Stevenson jumped out to a 4-0 lead with the game's first goals in just six minutes, two of which came from Grammer. Sophomore Olivia Baker started the scoring for the Mustangs with her first goal of the season. She finished the game with her first two goals and two points.  Stevenson led 7-3 at the half, scoring four goals on free positions.  Grammer and Meiklejohn each had two goals while sophomore Leah Warner also scored to extend her goal-scoring streak to 10 games. During that time, she has totaled 24 goals and 39 points as the team has posted a 6-4 record.  The Mustangs scored three of the first four goals to start the second half to take their largest lead of the game at six following Baker's second goal of the game with 12:04 remaining.  The Seahawks (8-9) were led by Lauren Bennett and Amelia Tenberg who
scored two goals each.
