WOMEN'S LACROSSE: Defending National Champ Salisbury Advances To Elite 8 With 16-3 Win Over Augustana; York Ends Season With 12-3 Setback At Amherst

Defending NCAA Division III women's lacrosse champion Salisbury gained a 16-3 win over Augustana Saturday to advance to Sunday's Elite 8 showdown against Franklin & Marshall.

In another part of the championship bracket, York dropped a 12-3 decision at Amherst to end the season with a 15-5 record.

The 20-1 Sea Gulls will host the Diplomats Sunday at 1 p.m. for the chance to advance to the four-team NCAA Championship Weekend May 24-25 at Gettysburg, Pa.

The nation is down to one unbeaten team, as the No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team eliminated Augustana (Ill.) College by a blistering score of 16-3 in a regional semifinal matchup in the NCAA Division III tournament Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Vikings entered Saturday's game as the top team in the country in scoring offense (18.53), points scored (371) and scoring margin (12.16), but that didn't intimidate the Salisbury defense, only allowing three goals by the Augustana charge. Causing nine turnovers of the Vikings' 17 for the game, the Gulls backline limited Augustana to just 10 clears on 14 attempts.

The offense for Salisbury (20-1) put on quite a show on its side of the field, starting the game with a 14-goal run. In a stretch led by junior attackers Shelby Nemecek and Kate Haker, with four goals and an assist apiece, the Sea Gulls kept the Vikings off the board for nearly 37 minutes of play.

At Amherst, the hosts held the visiting Spartans to just one goal in the first 40 minutes of the contest on the way to the victory.

Sarah Castle scored YCP's first goal with 22 minutes left in the first half to cut Amherst's lead to 2-1, but the Lord Jeffs scored the next seven goals over a 33-minute span to pull away for the win.  Megan Stine and Melissa Ritchie also tallied unassisted goals for York.
