Complete VaSID 2014 Women's Lacrosse All-State Team
Mary Washington senior attack Jenna Petrucelli earned Player of the Year honors and Christopher Newport freshman Meaghan Galvin was named Rookie of the Year to highlight a group of seven CAC women's lacrosse players named to the Virginia All-State College Division All-Star Team in a vote by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
Joining Petrucelli and Galvin on the first team were Mary
Washington's Emily Atkinson and Christopher
Newport's Ashton Marshall and Emily
Johnson. Landing on the second team were CNU's
Erin Callahan and UMW's Emily
Mott.
Petrucelli, a Cranbury, N.J. native, was a 2014 first team
All-American. She was also named first team all-region and first
team All-CAC this season, as well as the CAC Player of the Year.
She broke UMW school season record with 85 draw contro and led the
conference with 74 goals (sixth in nation).
With the honor, Galvin becomes the first player in program
history to receive the state's Rookie of the Year Award. She was
also the lone freshman in Virginia to earn first-team All-State
honors this year. The four honorees are tied for the second-most in
program history. Only the 2013 squad had more All-State
selections.
Galvin received the top freshman honor following a tremendous
campaign. During the year, the Arlington native ranked seventh in
the Capital Athletic Conference with 61 points and eighth with 42
goals. She also established a new CNU freshman record and finished
third in the conference with 66 draw controls.
Honored as the CAC Rookie of the Year as well, Galvin was a
first-team All-Conference and All-Region selection. She set a new
single-season program record with 17 free-position goals and scored
at least twice in each of her first 14 appearances, which stands as
the longest run to open a career in CNU history. She eventually
recorded at least one point in all 16 of her games.
Marshall also earned a spot on the first-team squad, which capped
off a decorated senior season. The fourth-year standout tied for
the league lead with 80 points and ranked third with 58 goals.
During the season, she scored at least once in all 18 games and had
11-point outbursts at Mary Washington on April 2 and against
Southern Virginia on April 16.
One of the most celebrated players in CNU history, Marshall is a
three-time first-team All-State member and four-time All-Conference
selection. The Round Hill native set a new school-record with 247
career goals and finished second all-time with 319 points. Earlier
this spring, she also became just the second Captain in program
history to earn first-team All-Region honors twice in her
career.
Anchoring the defensive unit, CNU's Johnson pieced together a
record-breaking campaign as well. During her senior season, she set
a new single-season program mark and finished second in the CAC
with 40 caused turnovers. The Gainesville native forced at least
one turnover in all 18 games, including four against Randolph-Macon
on March 1 and York on April 19.
Impressive throughout her career, Johnson is a two-time All-State
and All-Conference selection. A second-team All-Region honoree this
year, she leaves as the program's all-time leader with 89 career
caused turnovers. She also scooped up 152 ground balls, which ranks
fourth in CNU history.
Mary Washington's Atkinson also grabbed first team accolades after scoring 42 goals with 11 assists this season for the Eagles. She grabbed 29 ground balls and added 48 draw controls.
UMW's Mott gained second team honors after scoring eight goals
and 11 assists and leading the team with 33 ground balls. She
posted 22 draw controls.
CNU's Callahan picked up All-State accolades as well after earning
a spot on the second-team squad. An explosive offensive threat, she
led the team with 24 assists and ranked third with 57 points. She
also scored 33 goals during the year, including a record-breaking
run to kick off her collegiate career.
At the start of the season, Callahan posted five straight
hat-tricks, which marked the longest run to open a career in CNU
history. The Vienna native eventually notched at least three goals
in eight games during the year, highlighted by an eight-point
performance against Redlands on March 5. During that game, she also
contributed five assists, which set a new freshman record and
stands seventh on the program's single-game list.
