York Women's Lacrosse Advances to NCAA Sweet 16; Salisbury Ousted in Double OT Thriller

The 12th-ranked York women's lacrosse team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament with an 11-6 home triumph over Union (N.Y.) on Sunday afternoon in York, Pa., while eighth-ranked Salisbury's two-year reign atop Division III women's lacrosse came to an end with a 9-8 double-overtime loss to 13th-ranked Hamilton. 

In York, the host Spartans (14-5) rode a quick 6-0 start en route to an 11-6 victory over Union. York will travel to fifth-ranked Gettysburg (16-3) next Saturday for its Sweet 16 matchup. Gettysburg defeated FDU-Florham 13-6 in Sunday's second round. 

Jayme Verman led the Spartans with three goals and three assists, while Melissa Meehling added three scores. Rachel Donovan improved to 4-2 in net with six saves for the Spartans. 

In Salisbury, Md., the Sea Gulls fell to visiting Hamilton 9-8 in a thrilling double-overtime contest at Sea Gull Stadium. Salisbury, which captured its 13th straight CAC title this spring and is the two-time defending national champion, closes the season at 14-4 with the second-round defeat

It was a fight from start to finish, as the Sea Gulls (14-4) overcame two deficits through regulation, the first being three goals and the other being two, before claiming a late-game lead with four minutes remaining. Hamilton tied things up with 1:29 left in regulation to send the contest into overtime, before the Continentals' Darby Philbrick buried an unassisted shot with 4:04 left in the second overtime for the final 9-8 margin. 

Gianna Falcone turned away 10 shots for the game, two saves shy of a career high, in her 67:56 of tending the net. She concludes her freshman season with a 13-1 overall record, while sporting a 5.17 goals-against average, marking her as the top goalkeeper in the country in the category. Hannah Young led the SU attack with three goals and one assist, Kara O'Rourke tallied one goal and two assists, and Bethany Baer contributed one goal, one assist and five draw controls.
