Frostburg State And Stevenson Gain Big Wins To Advance To ECAC South Women's Soccer Tournament Semifinals

Top-seeded Frostburg State defeated Grove City, 4-1, while second-seeded Stevenson ran away from Neumann for a 7-0 victory in Wednesday's opening round of the 2011 ECAC South Women's Soccer Tournament.

The Bobcats (15-2-2) and Mustangs (13-5-3) will advance to the tournament semifinal round Saturday at Frostburg State.  FSU will face Penn State-Altoona in the first game of the DH, starting at noon, followed at 2:30 by Stevenson playing the winner of the Albright at Swarthmore first-round game.

At Frostburg, Md., the Bobcats used three second-half goals to break open a tie game and defeat Grove City, 4-1.

The teams traded goals early in the first half, with Frostburg sophomore forward Adria Graham opening the scoring in the fifth minute after a perfect lead pass from freshman Stephanie Fazenbaker and netted her 15th goal of the season. Grove City fought back and tied the score in the 12th minute on a Sam Weber goal set up by a crossing feed from Emily Hurley.

Grove City (10-8-2) hung tough through the first 45 minutes with the top-seeded Bobcats. Although outshot 9-4 in the first half, the Wolverines had some quality scoring chances to pull ahead in the contest.

The tune of that song changed right away in the second half. Graham, who earlier Wednesday was named the 2011 CAC Player of the Year, made a fine move to lose a Grove City defender and floated a perfectly placed shot into the upper left corner to put the Bobcats ahead, 2-1, in the 47th minute with her 16th of the year.

Two minutes later, senior Olivia Winant ripped a shot off the crossbar from the left side that bounced perfectly to Fazenbaker. The freshman one-touched it home to provide Frostburg (15-2-2) with some insurance.  Senior Dorie Gedridge capped the scoring on a long blast in the 80th minute.

The Bobcats outshot Grove City, 24-7, for the game and 15-3 in the second half. Senior Michelle Buckmaster made three saves to earn the win.

At Owings Mills, Md., Stevenson senior Stephanie Eyler scored three goals, tying the school record for a career with her 63rd, as the Mustangs posted a 7-0 victory over Neumann.

Stevenson (13-5-3) improved its record to 7-3-2 at home and evened its record to 2-2 in three ECAC South appearances. With 13 wins this season, the team is two shy of the school record set in 2007 and 2009. The second-seeded Mustangs advance to the semifinals for the second time.

For Eyler, tonight marked her second hat-trick of the season and the fifth of her career as she tied Stevenson's all-time goals record set by Jen Monaldi from 1995-98. Earlier today, Eyler received her fourth consecutive All-CAC First Team selection after breaking the CAC's career goals record with three goals against Hood on October 1.

The Mustangs took control of the game early as sophomore Amanda Marston scored the game-winner just 1:16 into the contest off an assist from sophomore Jamie Matlock
Matlock, who finished the game with a career-high four points with one goal and two assists, then found Eyler for her first goal of the game in the 11th minute.

Stevenson took a 3-0 halftime lead following the sixth goal of the season from freshman Meaghan Williams with just 1:58 remaining before the half off a an assist from sophomore Catherine Madden.  The goal was the first of four for the Mustangs in a span of 8:59 as they opened the second half with tallies from Matlock at 48:15 andEyler at 52:01.

Eyler tied the record in the 83rd minute when she scored unassisted on her own rebound to give Stevenson a 7-0 advantage.  With her three goals, Eyler now has 140 career points, just two shy of Monaldi's record.

The Mustangs capped the scoring with just 28 seconds remaining in the game when 2009 CAC Rookie of the Year, sophomore Melinda Kane netted her first goal since Oct. 24, 2009 in a 3-2 overtime win versus Mary Washington at home.  Kane has been rehabbing a knee injury that caused her to miss the 2010 season. Wednesday was just her ninth appearance of the season after she earned the conference's top newcomer honor in 2009, finishing second on the team behind Eyler with nine goals, five assists and 23 points.

Senior Brittany Ross stopped the only shot she faced while earning her 10th shutout of the season and 13th victory.  Briana King had 11 saves for the Knights (12-7-1) who set a school
record for wins in a season this year with 12.
