Road Warriors Frostburg State And Mary Washington Punch Tickets To Meet In 2014 CAC Women's Soccer Championship Match

Fourth-seeded Frostburg State and sixth-seeded Mary Washington both survived road trips to advance to the 2014 CAC Women's Soccer championship game, which will be hosted by the Bobcats Saturday.

FSU (12-4-5) played top-seeded Christopher Newport (12-3-4) to a 1-1 draw, then topped the host Captains in a shootout 4-3 to earn the berth in the conference championship match.  FSU's Erin Worthman and CNU's Joy Piirto each scored their seventh goals of the season in the second half to produce the tie.  Bobcat keeper Katie Smith recorded 13 saves during the match, and added a stop on CNU's fifth shootout attempt, to advance the Bobcats.  CNU is ranked fifth in this week's NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region.

Mary Washington's Jessica Bednarcik found the back of the net twice in the first half, including the game-winner with 2:45 left in the opening period, to lift the Eagles (12-6-2) into the title match with a 2-1 victory at second-seeded Salisbury (10-6-3).  Jamie Tacka scored the Gulls' lone goal off an assist from Ruthie Lucas to even the match at 1-1 in the 35th minute.

Frostburg State played a scoreless draw in the 2012 CAC title match against Salisbury, then won the trophy by defeating the Gulls in a shootout.  The Bobcats also played in the 2010 title match, falling to former CAC member Stevenson by a 1-0 margin in overtime.

Mary Washington will play in the CAC title contest for the first time since 2009, when the Eagles outlasted Stevenson in a shootout after the teams played to a 2-2 tie.  It was UMW's 13th conference crown in 24 CAC seasons.

During the regular season, FSU downed the Eagles by a 3-0 margin.  Worthman had a goal and an assist, both in the first half, during that victory.
