York and Mary Washington Post Road Victories to Advance to CAC Women's Soccer Championship

CAC Women's Soccer Tournament Bracket

Fifth-seeded Mary Washington and sixth-seeded York each posted road semifinal victories on Tuesday to advance to the CAC Championship game. The Spartans upended second-seeded St. Mary's 2-1 and Mary Washington blanked top-seeded Christopher Newport 1-0, setting up a title showdown in Fredicksburg, Va. on Saturday.

The Eagles will host York in a battle of the fifth and sixth seeds on Saturday, with the CAC's automatic NCAA bid on the line.

It marks the first time in CAC women's soccer history, and believed to be the first time in all sports in the CAC, that the #5 seed in the playoff tournament will host the championship game.  On the other side, it's the second-straight year, and third time in the last five years, that the #6 team advanced to the CAC women's soccer title conflict.

Previous sixth-seeds playing road games in the CAC Championship included St. Mary's in 2011 (lost at #1 Salisbury, 1-0 in OT) and Mary Washington last year (lost at #4 Frostburg State, 2-0).

This afternoon in St. Mary's City, Md., York (8-10) captured its second straight road playoff victory, holding off St. Mary's (10-7) for a 2-1 win. Jamie Sokolis and Emily Huey notched first half goals on assists from Baylee DiPietro and Corie Elliott. Gillian Sawyer pulled the Seahawks within 2-1 with a tally just after halftime, but York held on for the one-goal victory. The Spartans advance to the championship game for the second time in the last three years with the victory.

This evening in Newport News, Va., freshman Marisa Madaras scored the game's only goal in the 34th minute to lift Mary Washington (10-8-2) past Christopher Newport (14-5-1) 1-0, advancing the Eagles to the championship game for the second straight season.
