Playing on a frigid night at Captains Field in the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament, the 7th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team rolled into the second round with a 6-0 victory over Cabrini. 

CNU will advance to face 20th-ranked Lynchburg College on Sunday at 7:00 pm in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Captains and Hornets have faced off 16 times in program history with Lynchburg holding a 10-4-2 advantage in the series.

Throughout the season, the Captains have paired a dominating offensive effort with a stifling defensive unit and postseason play would not change that, at least in the first round. CNU tied the program record for goals in a season, with 76, after pouring in six against the Cavaliers in the first NCAA Tournament home game since 2006. Coincidentally, the 2006 season was the last time CNU scored a program-best 76 goals in a single year. On the other end, CNU also matched the program record for shutouts in a season, with 12, after holding Cabrini to just four total shots. It is the fifth time in program history CNU has registered 12 clean sheets in a single saeson. 

Christopher Newport improved to 19-0-1 with the win while Cabrini closed out the season with a 13-3-4 overall record. CNU outshot the Cavs by a final tally of 33-4, including a 20-3 edge in shots on-goal. 

The Captains scored two in the first half and tacked on four in the second to run away with the postseason win while smashing the program postseason records for goals, assists, and points in a match. CNU had never before scored more than three goals in an NCAA Tournament game. 

Playing in front of a raucous crowd of over 600 on a cold night in Newport News, the Captains got on the board in the 22nd minute when rookie Victoria Reed notched her first career gamewinner. Logan Montel set up the score with a touch pass into the middle of the box where Reed put away her second career goal. Junior midfielder Gabby Gillis would make it 2-0 heading into halftime with her 14th goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Taylor Hudgins played a beautiful ball to Gillis up the middle, and the Captains' leading scorer made a move to get around the goalkeeper for an open net shot. 

The flood gates opened in the second half as four more Captains got in the scoring column. Goal number three was a header off a corner kick from Keiley McCarthy, as the sophomore defender grabbed her fourth goal of the season. Taking the corner, sophomore Carson Pokorny tied the program record for assists in a season, with 13, matching Carly Utterback's 2012 campaign. 

In the 67th minute, rookie Madeline Kelsey, the Captains' leading scorer on Saturday night, picked up an assist to set up Taylor Hudgins' for a goal in the middle of the box. Sophomore Kayla Locklear cleaned up a second chance opportunity in the 78th minute, and then Kelsey grabbed a goal of her own in the 79th minute off a feed from rookie defender Olivia Bolton. The helper was Bolton's first career point.

Defensively, the Captains played a stellar game with starters Danielle Pratt, Alexi Manley, Shaye Doherty, and McCarthy holding Cabrini to just four attempts in the game. Senior goalkeeper Carly Maglio turned away all three attempts on frame and played over 81 minutes of the combined shutout to pick up her 51st career victory. Sophomore Maddy Belanger saw her first career NCAA Tournament minutes in relief to help secure the clean sheet. 

Cabrini goalkeeper Gabby LeGendre made 14 saves in the contest while three different Cavaliers registered shots on-goal in the final game of the season.
