Christopher Newport Women's Soccer Selected to Host NCAA Tournament Opening Rounds

NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament Bracket

Riding a program record 16-game winning streak and boasting one of only five unbeaten records in the nation, the 8th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team has been selected to host the NCAA Tournament first- and second-round games beginning on Saturday at Captains Field.

Christopher Newport won its second straight Capital Athletic Conference Championship to secure automatic entry into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament, marking the 10th all-time appearance for the Captains. It is the fourth time in the first five seasons under head coach Dan Weiler that CNU will appear in the postseason championship event and the first time since 2006 that CNU will host.

CNU will host Cabrini (13-2-4), the champions of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), while also welcoming Lynchburg College (18-3-0) and McDaniel College (12-5-2) for the first round.

With an 18-0-1 overall record, the Captains are one of only five teams in Division III without a loss this season. The 18 victories is a program record as the Captains have put together one of the most impressive performances in the history of CNU soccer.

The Captains will take on Cabrini College, making the program's eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Cavaliers, out of Radnor, Pennsylvania, will travel to Newport News to face the Captains for the first time. Unbeaten over their last six games, Cabrini is led by senior All-Conference forward Taylor Tralie with 37 points this season on 13 goals and 11 assists.

In the other first-round matchup at Captains Field, ODAC Champion Lynchburg College will face off against McDaniel, who earned it's third straight NCAA at-large berth after falling in the Centennial Conference semifinals. Lynchburg is making its 18th NCAA Championship appearance and the Green Terror will be appearing for the third time.

The selection by the NCAA National Championship Committee marks the fifth time in program history that CNU will host the tournament.
