York And St. Mary's Win First Round CAC Women's Tennis Playoff Matches

Third-seeded York stopped sixth-seeded Frostburg State, 6-3, and fourth-seeded St. Mary's defeated fifth-seeded Wesley, 8-1, in Sunday's first round of the 2010 CAC Women's Tennis playoffs.

The Spartans advance to Tuesday's (4/19) CAC tournament semifinal match at second-seeded Salisbury while the Seahawks will challenge top-seeded and defending CAC champion Mary Washington in Tuesday's other semifinal clash.

The winners of Tuesday's matches will play Friday for the 2011 conference crown at the home courts of the higher-seeded team.

At York, the host Spartans posted their 11th win of the season by topping visiting Frostburg State. YCP improves to 11-6 on the year and move on in the league playoffs and now enter the semifinal round.

Leading off with doubles, the Spartans opened a 2-1 lead after the three matches. In first doubles, Sarah Wargo and Katelyn Acker combined to post an 8-4 triumph, marking their eighth win together this season. Third doubles saw Stephanie Nelson and Nicole Olson, a pair which has done tremendous work as of late, snag an 8-2 win as they now sport a strong 6-1 mark.

Wargo, Acker, and Nelson were each victorious in singles play while Megan McCullin also added an individual win to the Spartan ledger.

At St. Mary's, the Seahawks swept the doubles action to gain the early lead and won singles matches two through six to clinch the team victory.
