St. Mary's Women's Tennis Remains Undefeated In CAC With Shutout Victory Over York

The St. Mary's women's tennis team remained undefeated in conference play with a shutout victory over York Tuesday and set up a showdown with Salisbury today (4/11) that will likely determine a first-round bye and home court advantage in the CAC playoff semifinals.

Also this week, York stopped Stevenson Tuesday by a 7-2 count and Hood picked up an 8-1 road win against Wesley.  YCP (5-8, 2-3 CAC) is tied with Frostburg State (4-8, 2-3 CAC) while Hood (5-9, 1-3 CAC) moved into sixth place, one half game ahead of Stevenson (4-6, 1-4) for the final CAC playoff position.

At SMC, first-year player Emily Stumpfig set the program's single-season singles wins record Tuesday afternoon as the St. Mary's recorded a 9-0 victory over the visiting York.

Stumpfig posted a 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles for her 16th singles wins of the season, surpassing the old record of 15 set by senior Kathleen Ramsey and junior Chelsea Bradcovich in 2010.

The doubles tandem of Stumpfig and junior Shelby Mullennix moved to 9-0 on the season with their 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Sarah Minkoff tallied her eighth consecutive singles match win with a 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Sophomore Alyssa Stine, the only other Seahawk in double digits besides Stumpfig, notched her 13th win of the season with her 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles.

St. Mary's will be back in action on Friday, April 13 as the Seahawks welcome Salisbury University, who ranks 17th in the Atlantic South region, to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a league match at 3:30 pm.

At Dover, Del., Hood (5-9, 1-3 CAC) won its first CAC match of the season, 8-1, over Wesley (0-7, 0-6 CAC).

Emily Maerz, Emily Schrodel, Casey Miller, Sandra Dziadas and Kirsten Friend were all winners at both singles and doubles for Hood. The Blazers topped the Wolverines for the sixth straight time in the series.

Hood won all three doubles matches and the first five singles contests for its first win of the spring since March 14. The Blazers also eclipsed their seasonal win total from the 2010-11 campaign.
