St. Mary's Tennis Coach Derek Sabedra Reaches Record And Milestone

The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team picked up a pair of convincing wins in Virginia Saturday to give sixth-year head men's and women's tennis coach Derek Sabedra the most women's tennis coaching victories in program history as well as his overall 100th career victory (men's and women's records combined).

A week after tying the women's tennis coaching record at 47 wins, Sabedra passed the former St. Mary's women's tennis coach, the late Paul Spencer, with 49 career women's tennis coaching victories as the Seahawks picked up an 8-1 win over NCAA Division II Virginia Union University before sweeping host Randolph-Macon, 9-0.

Sabedra is now just one win shy of his 50th career women's tennis victory as he owns a 49-49 record in six years at the helm of the St. Mary's women's tennis program.  The win over Virginia Union (0-1) also gave Sabedra his 100th career wins as he boasts 52 victories in six years at the helm of the Seahawk men's tennis program.

St. Mary's (5-2) has now won four consecutive matches as the Seahawks head into their home non-conference match with Trinity (D.C.) University at the Somerset Tennis Complex on Friday, March 2 at 4:00 pm for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day.

First-year Emily Stumpfig recorded her fifth consecutive singles win to improve to a team-best 9-1 record with two victories this weekend, both at No. 3 singles.

Senior Sarah Minkoff is also on a five-match win streak with a pair of wins at No. 5 singles.

The doubles tandems of sophomore Alexa Gaul/ junior Chelsea Bradcovich; first-year Lauren Rost/sophomore Alyssa Stine; and junior Shelby Mullennix /first-year Emily Stumpfig are all undefeated with 3-0 records.
