St. Mary's Women's Tennis Tops York in CAC First Round

CAC Women's Tennis Tournament Bracket 

Fourth-seeded St. Mary's posted an 8-1 victory over fifth-seeded York in the first round of the CAC Women's Tennis Tournament, earning its seventh consecutive appearance in the CAC semifinals with the win. 

St. Mary's will now face top-seeded Mary Washington in the CAC semifinals on Tuesday, April 22. Match start time has yet to be determined. Second-seeded Christopher Newport will host third-seeded Salisbury on Tuesday's other semifinal. 

The Seahawks started the match with a 3-0 lead as York only traveled four players; therefore, defaulting No. 3 doubles as well as No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

Juniors Shannon Ramsey and Emily Stumpfig stretched the advantage to 4-0 with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. An 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles by junior Lauren Rost  and Mollie Johnson secured the Seahawks' spot in the semifinals.

Stumpfig (No. 2), Ramsey (No. 1), and L. Rost (No. 3) all won their respective singles matches in straight sets, dropping only a combined five games.

York freshman Mckenzi Krout battled St. Mary's sophomore Emily Rost at No. 4 singles for York's lone point. Rost notched a 7-5 win in the first set and another tight set ensued as Krout pulled out a 7-6 (8-6) victory in the second to force a tiebreaker set. Krout then edged Rost for the win by a 10-7 margin in the tiebreaker.

In non-conference action, No. 21 Mary Washington fell to No. 3 Johns Hopkins 6-3 in a nationally-ranked showdown. UMW took two of the doubles points, but Johns Hopkins took five of the six singles matches for the victory. 

Lindsay Raulston and Shelby Harris picked up a big win at one doubles over Amanda Austi and Hailey Hogan, 8-4. Alex Ritter and Alina Suyama also picked up a point for the Eagles at No. 2 doubles. Ritter and Suyama won 8-6 over Stephanie Rettig and Shannon Herndon.

Raulston was the lone Eagle to win in singles, picking up a hard faught three setter, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-6 at No. 1 singles against Austi.
