Mary Washington's Brogan Advances to NCAA Singles Round of 16 Before Falling; Brogan and Harris Alive in Doubles Quarters

Mary Washington sophomore Kait Brogan won her first round singles match at the NCAA Division III Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., before falling in the second round, before teaming with Shelby Harris for a first round doubles victory. 

In singles, Brogan dropped the first set, 6-3, but then won the next two over Sofia Vega of Texas Lutheran, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16.

There, Brogan faced off against Joulia Likhanskaia of Bowdoin. Brogan gained a break to lead 5-4 in the first set, Likhanskaia won the next three points to take the first set, 7-5, and then carried that momentum into the second, where she won, 6-2.

Brogan gained All-America honors for advancing to the round of 16.

In doubles, Brogan had to come back for her third match of the day, as she and Harris took on Nithya Kanagasegar and Sara Zargham of Case Western. UMW jumped out to a big 6-2 win in set one, before outlasting Case in the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6.

Brogan and Harris will compete in the national quarterfinals on Friday against the Bowdoin duo of Tiffany Cheng and Joulia Likhanskaia at 4:30 p.m.
