Mary Washington Tops Christopher Newport 5-1, Claims 14th Straight CAC Women's Tennis Crown

Top-seeded and 15th-ranked Mary Washington downed second-seeded and 23rd-ranked Christopher Newport 5-1 in the CAC women's tennis championship match on Saturday afternoon. The victory marks the 14th straight conference crown for the Eagles, who have defeated CNU in the title match each of the last three seasons. 

With the win, UMW earns the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. NCAA brackets and pairings will be announced on Monday, May 8. 

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with No. 1 pairing Kait Brogan and Taylor Diffley securing an 8-1 victory over CNU's Alexandra Drye and McKinney Harwood for the first point of the match.

CNU evened the score at 1-1 with an 8-3 victory for Kate Huck and Johanna Ranta-aho at No. 2 over Ashley Barrow and Rachel Summers, before the UMW No. 3 duo of Caroline Mosberg and Danielle Mirabella earned a hard-fought 9-7 triumph over Emily Morgan and Katie Carlson. 

In singles play, Mosberg made it 3-1 Eagles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Drye at the No. 4 position. Mirabella notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 over CNU's Isabelle Wessel, before Summers clinched the match for UMW with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 over Huck.
