York Tops Southern Virginia in CAC Women's Tennis First Round

The York College women's tennis squad opened their stay in the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference tournament with a 6-3 win over Southern Virginia in the opening round on Friday in York. The match was played indoors at the Wisehaven Tennis Center due to the morning rains in York.

The Spartans advance to the CAC semifinals against top seeded Mary Washington. York is now 11-5 overall while Southern Virginia sees their season come to an end at 14-7.

The Spartans took two of the three doubles matches to take the early advantage. The second doubles team of Rachel Wagner and Gina Liguori combined to earn an 8-3 win over Natalie Teets and Audrey McBride. Jessica Sherman and Caroline Marderness teamed up to notch an 8-4 win over Lauren Morrison and Mercedes Matley in the third doubles match.

York captured the first two singles matches as Katie Wagner and Rachel Wagner both won their matches. Katie Wagner earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Elizabeth Fuchs in the first singles match. Rachel Wagner recorded an 8-6 win over Rachel Christensen in the second singles match.

Southern Virginia earned wins in the third and fifth singles match but York iced the win with a Gina Liguori fourth singles win and a Hannah Shinsky sixth singles victory.

The Spartans now advance to face top seeded Mary Washington in Tuesday's Capital Athletic Conference semifinals. The match time will be determined this weekend.
