Salisbury Thrower Chelsea Tavik Selected To Compete In 2011 NCAA Indoor National Championships

There is one meet remaining in the 2010-11 indoor track & field season – the NCAA Division III National Championships – and Salisbury University will be represented. Sophomore Chelsea Tavik got word late Sunday night that she has qualified to compete in the women's shot put competition at the meet held this Friday and Saturday at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

On March 5, Tavik competed at the Virginia Tech Last Chance meet and bettered her previous NCAA provisional qualifying mark (and her school record) with a distance of 44' 6.5". Her performance ranked her as the 14th-best performer nationally in the event this season, on the bubble to receive an invitation to the championships.

Sunday night, when the field was announced, the NCAA welcomed 15 student-athletes in the women's shot put, which included Tavik.

Junior Jennifer Houghton, who also posted a provisional qualifying mark in the women's weight throw on Saturday, found herself just outside of the group selected for the national meet in that event.

Tavik will put her skills on display in the women's shot put on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. Salisbury has had five individual national champions in track & field, one during the indoor season. Tavik will attempt to become Salisbury's first female individual national champion.
